Case Study: CIWEM Roof Garden

CIWEM Roof garden small

Client: CIWEM

Services: ,

The Brief:

The Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) needed full design services for the creation of a roof garden for the two-storey extension to their new headquarters in London.  It was to include solar panels and had to ensure the design was in line with a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Our Role:

  • Johns Associates provided ecological input for the outline specification of the green roof and completed the relevant parts of the BREEAM submission.  The planning application was approved.
  • We provided a detailed specification for the green roof, which also incorporated solar panels, to discharge the planning conditions and fulfill the BREEAM criteria.
  • Further in-house ecological input was provided to include enhancement measures to maximise the biodiversity potential of the roof.
  • We produced a management plan and design rationale to support the proposals.

The Outcome:

The roof design consisted of both brown and green roof elements with over 40 plant species.  It provides habitat for black redstart, solitary bees, bumblebees, ladybirds and lacewings.   CIWEM now occupy their new headquarters and the project has achieved BREEAM Excellent status.
